1891.

The small industrial town was only beginning to experience the dawn of a new epoch. Steam-powered automobiles rolled slowly along the cobblestone streets, airships drifted lazily above the rooftops, and thick black smoke poured endlessly from the tall chimney of the newly built engine factory. Progress had arrived only recently, yet it had already changed the life of every resident.

Deep within the town, far from the bustle of the streets, the windows of Professor Mashivarius's laboratory glowed brightly.

Gears creaked.

A small steam-powered robot carefully approached the workbench and set down a steaming cup of coffee. Its mechanical arm lightly brushed against a stack of blueprints, nearly sending several sheets to the floor.

"Careful, Argo..." the professor said with a weary smile.

It was his first robot. A simple steam-powered assistant capable only of bringing coffee, clearing away dirty dishes, and carrying out the simplest tasks. Nearby, curled up beside the stove, his pet raccoon Sam was sleeping.

Mashivarius sighed.

So this was the entire company that would witness the greatest discovery in human history.

He walked over to the massive glass capsule standing in the center of the laboratory. Inside, a small crystal of extraordinary beauty glowed with a soft bluish light.

The world's first Flur crystal.

Decades of research, thousands of sleepless nights, endless mistakes and failures had finally brought him to this moment.

Steam was a magnificent invention for its time, but he could see its limits. Machines remained heavy and slow, airships took far too long to cross vast distances, factories devoured tons of coal, and cities drowned in smoke.

Flur was supposed to change everything.

This new form of energy was incredibly powerful, virtually inexhaustible, and unlike anything known to science.

If his calculations were correct, the world would leave its old limitations behind forever.

He looked once more at his reflection in the glass.

A gaunt face. Eyes reddened from sleepless nights. Gray hair that had not been there just a few years ago.

No one knew how much of himself he had sacrificed within these walls. No one would believe him if they saw his calculations. And if they did believe him, they would surely try to steal his discovery.

That was why only three were present in the laboratory today.

Him. Argo. And Sam.

"Well then..." the professor said quietly. "It's time."

For the final experiment, all the equipment had been moved deep underground into a specially constructed testing chamber.

Mashivarius carefully inspected the instruments one last time.

Energy supply...

Stabilization...

Emitter circuits...

Resonators...

Everything was working perfectly.

All that remained was to channel the flow of energy through the cultivated crystal and see whether it could become a new source of power for all humanity.

The professor placed his hand on the main switch.

At that moment, he heard a familiar rustling behind him.

Sam had awakened.

The raccoon happily rushed toward his owner, expecting, as always, to find his favorite crackers in the professor's pocket.

"Sam, stop..."

But it was already too late.

The animal's paw accidentally caught one of the connecting cables.

A sharp metallic crack rang out.

Warning lights flashed across the instruments.

The needles on the gauges instantly shot beyond their limits.

"No..."

The Flur crystal erupted in a blinding flash.

The laboratory was flooded with white light, brighter than a thousand suns.

In the next instant, an invisible wave swept silently across the entire world.

It passed through the walls of houses.

Through mountains.

Through forests.

Through oceans.

For a fraction of a second, steam engines stopped.

Streetlights went dark.

Airships froze in the sky.

Then everything started working again, as though nothing had happened.

But the world would never be the same again.

Across the Earth, people began to die.

Some dropped dead in the streets, while others vanished without a trace, as though they had never existed at all. Within days, human civilization ceased to exist.

The cities remained standing.

Factories continued to belch smoke until their furnaces finally went cold.

Trains came to a permanent halt on their tracks.

Airships slowly descended to the ground, their crews gone.

Only the wind wandered through the emptying streets.

Dead silence filled the laboratory.

Professor Mashivarius lay motionless among the sparking equipment.

Broken glassware slowly crumbled onto the stone floor.

Thick steam rose from damaged pipes.

The small steam-powered robot Argo stood motionless beside his creator.

For the first time, something appeared in his glass eyes that had never been there before.

Awareness.

In the far corner of the laboratory, Sam the raccoon slowly rose onto his hind legs.

For a long moment, he stared at his paws, then slowly turned his gaze toward the world around him.

Something new had appeared in his eyes as well.

At that moment, the animal's consciousness crossed an invisible threshold, forever changing the history of this world.

And so a new epoch began.
