# Who Belongs to the Order

The Children of Light are far more widespread than the Servants of Decay. They maintain great citadels, fortified monasteries, parishes, caravan chapels, military garrisons, hospitals, schools, orphanages, and watchtowers along dangerous roads.

The Order welcomes beastfolk, rescued orphans, former soldiers, pilgrims, healers, warriors, fanatics, idealists, and those who have lost everything but still want to believe that the world can be saved.

### Novices of Light

The lowest rank of the Order. Novices live at parishes, assist healers, clean weapons, carry water, learn to read sacred texts, tend to the wounded, and assist during services. They are not yet entrusted with real authority and are not permitted to wear the white battle cloak.

For many orphans and refugees, becoming a novice is a path to salvation. The Order gives them shelter, food, education, and a sense of purpose. But from their very first days, they are taught: the Light demands discipline. The Light does not tolerate laziness, cowardice, lies, or doubts that might become a doorway for Decay.

### Children of Light

The main body of the Order. These warrior-servants guard parishes, escort caravans, defend settlements, patrol dangerous roads, and take part in military campaigns. They wear white or light-gray cloaks, simple armor, and symbols of a ray, the sun, an open eye, or a flame upon their chests.

An ordinary servant of the Children of Light is neither a paladin nor a priest.

They are disciplined warriors of faith. They know how to hold formation, recite prayers, provide first aid, protect the weak, and refrain from asking unnecessary questions when orders come from above.

### Lightbringers

The spiritual servants of the Order. They conduct services, teach novices, deliver sermons, receive oaths, oversee parishes, aid the sick, and comfort those who have lost loved ones. To ordinary people, the Lightbringers are most often the face of the Order.

They speak more gently than the Questioners and take up arms less often than the paladins. But this does not mean they are weak. A skilled Lightbringer can raise the spirits of an entire village, keep a garrison from falling into panic, or convince a detachment to march to its death if it has been declared the will of the Light.

### Healers of Light

A separate branch of servants who work in hospitals, field infirmaries, and shelters. They use herbs, surgical instruments, purified Flur extracts, ancient medical knowledge, and the power of Light channeled through small Flur crystals.

Healers of Light do not resurrect the dead. They cannot return a soul to its body as paladins can during the Invocation of the First Ray. But some are capable of remarkable feats of healing: stopping severe bleeding, closing deep wounds, treating burns, drawing out poison, reducing the effects of Flur contamination, cleansing wounds of corruption, or keeping a dying person on the threshold of life until a paladin arrives.

To ordinary beastfolk, the Healers of Light often seem like the true miracle of the Order. They are gentler than the Questioners, quieter than the paladins, and closer to the everyday suffering of living beings. But even their power is not simple magic. It too flows through Flur — purified, guided, and transformed by faith in the Light.

### Keepers of the Flame

Servants responsible for sacred fires, relics, lamps, seals, and purifying pyres. They ensure that the ritual flame in the great temples of Light never goes out. In smaller parishes, it is the Keeper of the Flame who opens the morning service and extinguishes the evening lamps.

In times of peace, they appear almost harmless. But during Purification Campaigns, they are the ones who carry the torches used to burn infected nests, shrines of Decay, lairs of the undead, and places deemed irredeemably corrupted.

#### Questioners

The most feared caste within the Children of Light. Officially, they serve the truth. In practice, they are the Inquisition of the Order.

The Questioners hunt for heresy, secret Servants of Decay, Flur contamination, traces of necromancy, dealings with the undead, treason, worship of false powers, and any doubts that, in their eyes, might open a path for darkness.

They wear white or gray-white garments without bright emblems. Many conceal their faces behind smooth masks. Their symbol is a thin ray aimed at an open eye. They speak calmly, almost politely, which only makes them more frightening.

The Questioners believe that pain can draw lies into the open. Their interrogations are called the Trial by Truth. They rarely begin with torture. First come questions, then the same questions again, then inconsistencies, then isolation, mirrors, light, sleep deprivation, prayers, confessions — and only then, fire.

**Their official motto is:**

> *“The Light is merciful to the pure. With the rest, it is precise.”*

### Paladins of Light

The elite military caste of the Order. Paladins of Light are more than powerful warriors. They are symbols of faith, living banners, and the primary striking force of the Children of Light on the battlefield.

Paladins wear heavy white-and-gold armor, carry consecrated blades and shields bearing symbols of Light, and wear cloaks that must never be removed before an enemy. Every paladin undergoes the Trial by Flame and earns the right to lead troops into battle in the name of the Order.

A paladin must be brave, disciplined, loyal, and ready to die in a way that makes their death an example to others. But unlike the Questioners, many paladins see the Light more as protection than punishment. Because of this, hidden conflicts often arise between paladins and Questioners.

The defining ability of the Paladins of Light is their capacity to channel an immense flow of the Light's power, transformed through Flur. This allows them not only to protect and inspire, but also to perform the rarest rite of restoring life — the Invocation of the First Ray.

An ordinary but powerful paladin can return one fallen companion to life once per battle, provided the body has not been completely destroyed and the soul has not gone too far. Exceptional paladins, such as Tirion the Lion, can resurrect several fallen allies on the battlefield, but even for them it takes a terrible toll. Afterward, a paladin may barely be able to stand, as the Light passes through them like a white-hot current and drains almost all their strength.

### Commanders of the Order

The military leaders of fortresses, garrisons, campaigns, and defensive lines. Commanders are responsible for supplies, maps, roads, reconnaissance, sieges, fortifications, military discipline, and coordination between paladins, ordinary Children of Light, and parishes.

A Commander does not have to be a paladin, but their authority in military matters is immense. During major campaigns, it is the Commanders who decide where the army will make camp, which mountain pass to seize, when to retreat, and when to send troops into the attack.

### Bishops of Light

The senior spiritual authorities of the Order. They govern major parishes, temple territories, monasteries, schools, hospitals, and sacred lands. Bishops decide which settlements will receive protection, where new temples will be built, who may participate in the highest rites, and who will be handed over to the Questioners.

Their power may not always be visible on the battlefield, but it is they who determine how the Order speaks to the world: through mercy, preaching, fear, or fire.

### Archbishops of the Dawn Throne

A small circle of the senior spiritual rulers of the Children of Light. They stand close to the Patriarch, preserve the central doctrines, interpret ancient texts, authorize great campaigns, appoint bishops, and safeguard the purity of faith within the Order itself.

They rarely raise their voices and rarely take up arms. Their power is different: a single decision can close a parish, send paladins on a campaign, consecrate a fortress, or authorize the Questioners to begin a Purification.

### Patriarch of the First Ray

The supreme leader of the Children of Light. He bears the title Patriarch of the First Ray. He resides in the Order's main citadel and is regarded as the highest interpreter of the will of the Light.

The Patriarch is chosen once and rules until his death. He can be removed only by a unanimous decision of the council of the Order's highest-ranking officials. Yet throughout the entire history of the Order, no Patriarch has ever been removed.

Ancient as the Order itself, one of its founders and the foremost champion of the Light's justice, Peytron Niel is an old tiger. He is also one of the most powerful paladins of the Order.

To ordinary servants, he is an almost unreachable figure. To the paladins, he is the source of their highest oath. To the Questioners, he is the one whose silence can be more terrifying than any command.

The Patriarch does not always issue cruel orders personally. Sometimes, it is enough for him simply not to stop those who act in his name.
